Vocalizations emitted by the Egyptian mongoose, Herpestes ichneumon, living in the wild

Viverrids, like other carnivores, frequently utilize sounds for intra- and interspecific communication (Ewer 1973, Peters 1984, Peters and Wozencraft 1989). Usually, social species make use of a greater variety of sounds than solitary ones (Diicker 1965). In this note we give information on sound emission by free-living Egyptian mongooses, Herpestes ichneumon, a semisocial species (Valverde 1967, Kingdon 1977, Ben-Yaacow and Yom-tow 1983, Palomares and Delibes unpubl.).The research was supported by CSIC-DCICYT (project PB87-0405) and a PFPI fellowship granted by the Spanish Ministerio de Educacion y Ciencia.Peer reviewe

    Interspecific killing among mammalian carnivores

    Get PDF
Interspecific killing among mammalian carnivores is common in nature and accounts for up to 68% of known mortalities in some species. Interactions may be symmetrical (both species kill each other) or asymmetrical (one species kills the other), and in some interactions adults of one species kill young but not adults of the other. There is a positive significant relationship between the body masses of solitary killer species and body masses of their victim species, and grouping species kill larger victims than solitary species. Interactions and consumption of the victim appear more common when food is scarce or disputed. In response to killers, victim species may alter their use of space, activity patterns, and form groups. Consequences of interspecific killing include population reduction or even extinction, and reduction and enhancement of prey popu- lations, and may therefore have important implications for conser- vation and management of carnivores and their preyPeer reviewe

Phase Shifter for Millimeter-Wave Frequency Range Based on Glide Symmetric Structures

    Get PDF
The use of glide symmetry in radiofrequency devices to introduce dispersive effects has been recently proposed and demonstrated. One of these effects is to control the propagation constant of the structure. Here, we propose a mm-wave phase shifter whose elements have a glide-symmetric configuration to achieve a greater phase shift in the same waveguide space than the non-glide-symmetric case. The glide-symmetric phase shifter is implemented in waveguide technology and is formed by rows of metallic pins that produce the desired phase shift. To assess the better performance of the glide-symmetric phase shifter, it is compared to its non-glide-symmetric version whose metallic pins are located only in one of the broad sides of the waveguide. The operating frequency range of the phase shifter is 67 to 75 GHz. Results show a 180 degree phase shift in regard to the reference waveguide without pins, and 50 degrees more than the non-glide-symmetric version.

    Get PDF
